Stricter gun laws

Per Harris For Alabama: Purpose; methods (al4bidenharrisjones.blogspot.com), this blog entry gives links to work I have previously done related to obtaining stricter gun laws. My work is for consideration by other Alabamians possibly to do similarly in their campaigning for Kamala Harris, to make suggestions to me, and/or to come up with their own ideas for campaigning for Kamala Harris related to obtaining stricter gun laws.

My work for the past two years has been mainly to try to get Alabama city councils and county commissions to pass resolutions calling on the Alabama legislature to enact stricter gun laws and for police departments and sheriff's offices to do similarly. Be An Alabama Rootstriker* with Rob Shattuck: Draft statement to Birmingham City Council re gun control laws (al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com)

Subject: Availing of next 80 days to advance cause of gun control
Good morning, H.I.V.E. Alabama:
In your posts at https://hivealabama.com/, I saw a couple of times you had gun control related events with Moms Demand representatives.
Per Harris For Alabama: Stricter gun laws (al4bidenharrisjones.blogspot.com), I am especially interested in finding ways to use the Harris-Walz campaign to advance the cause of gun control in Alabama.
If H.I.V.E. Alabama is interested in this, I would like to discuss with you things that could be done during the next 80 days.
In this regard, I offer for your consideration the below email I sent yesterday to UAB Professor Jeffery Walker, who is on the Board of Directors of Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama (including some attached emails).
Please email me or call me (205-967-5586) if I might have a discussion with H.I.V.E. Alabama about this.
Thank you.

Dear Professor Walker,
Thank you very much for getting back to me.
The extensive amount of emails may have led to confusion. I am only Citizen Shattuck and not a Chief Shattuck.
We are agreed that, as you say, "Gun control . . . is difficult to address because of politics."
I would link the intractability of the politics of gun control to America's unique national culture of guns and love of guns. From that, I contend that gun violence will not get reduced until there is a change in America's culture of guns and love of guns, and such cultural change leads to an overcoming of the intractability of the politics of gun control.
In proceeding with you, first I am interested in the extent to which you agree with what I am arguing for in the emails I have sent and that appear below. To the extent you and me talking will help determine how much you agree with what I am arguing for, please let's talk (205-967-5586).
Depending on the extent to which you agree with what I am arguing for, I would next like to suggest presenting our thoughts to the Board of Directors of Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama.
This could be in the form of your forwarding our email correspondence to the Board, accompanied by such introductory commentary as you would care to make to the Board.
Alternatively, I would be very amenable to our making a presentation to the Board at a Board meeting physically in person or via Zoom.
Maybe you have some other ideas for how to push this forward (assuming you share my desire to push this forward).
Just let me know.
Again, thanks so very much for your getting back to me on this.
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck

Hi Chief Shattuck,
Sorry if you haven’t heard back from me about a meeting – I haven’t received anything on that. I would like to talk with you about gun control it is a complicated concept that requires multi-layered responses. Gun control is certainly one that is difficult to address because of politics. Let’s talk before long.

You don't often get email from rdshatt@aol.com. Learn why this is important
Dear Police Chief Wood,
I am writing this email to you by reason of your becoming the new President of the Alabama Association of Chiefs of Police.
In July I wrote the below email to Sheriff Huey 'Hoss' Mack, who has become the new executive director of the Alabama Sherrif's Association.
In that email, I said:
I contend that (i) stricter gun laws are an imperative for reducing gun violence in Alabama, (ii) Alabama Republicans are opposed to reducing gun violence in Alabama through stricter gun laws, and (iii) the Republicans' reasons for opposing stricter gun laws may be that they do not believe stricter gun laws will reduce gun violence; or that stricter gun laws impair the capacity of citizens to defend themselves against tyrannical government; or that opposing stricter gun laws is part and parcel of the Republicans fighting the culture war.
I believe Alabamians should reject the reasons Alabama Republicans have for opposing stricter gun laws and Alabamians should rise up against the Alabama Republicans who are harming the health and welfare of Alabamians through the Republicans' control of the Alabama legislature and refusal to pass stricter gun laws.
I think Alabama sheriff's offices and police departments should not be cowed by politics and they should point fingers publicly at the Republicans in Montgomery who are opposed to stricter gun laws for reducing gun violence in Alabama. This will be supportive of Alabamians rising up against the Alabama Republicans in Montgomery who are harming the health and welfare of Alabamians.I have sought an appointment with UAB Department of Criminal Justice Professor Jeffrey Walker, who is on the Board of Directors of Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama, to discuss my above views with him. I will let you and Sheriff Mack know what I learn from Professor Walker.
Thank you for reading this email.
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck

Subject: Your new role as Executive Director of the Alabama Sheriffs Association
Dear Sheriff Mack:
This email is prompted by Rep. Ensler's July 8th post on X announcing your new role as Executive Director of the Alabama Sheriffs Association, and saying, "Together, we can work at the state legislature towards enhancing community safety for all and saving lives." https://x.com/EnslerPhillip/status/1810304011934851544
Donald Watkins, in a July 5th post on Facebook, set forth ten crime-fighting measures for the City of Birmingham to aggressively implement. Birmingham Can Retake Control of City Streets from Drug Dealers and Gang Members by Implementing this Crime-Fighting Plan (donaldwatkins.com).
A comment Donald put on his Facebook post said:
Last Friday, Mayor Woodfin suggested that violent criminals must police themselves by walking away from conflicts that lead to deadly violence. Several media pundits have suggested the implementation of new social programs that are aimed at reducing poverty. Some have advocated for more gun control laws. None of these people has pushed for a return to effective policing with a fully staffed 900-member police department.
I urge you (and all of the persons copied on this email) to review Donald Watkins' suggested crime-fighting measures; think about the feasibility of the measures, their cost and their possible effectiveness; and decide whether you (and they) wish to try to push for the City of Birmingham (and possibly other Alabama cities) to implement some or all of the measures.
I wish to focus on measure 1 ('1. Declare war on violent crimes within the city and mean it. Put the city’s money on the front-line of the fight against violent crime.") and the above quoted comment that says, "Some have advocated for more gun control laws."
I sent the below July 8th email to Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed's office, to the Montgomery City Council and to other persons, concerning the City of Montgomery's publicized spike in violent crime. In the email, I say:
I contend that (i) stricter gun laws are an imperative for reducing gun violence in Alabama, (ii) Alabama Republicans are opposed to reducing gun violence in Alabama through stricter gun laws, and (iii) the Republicans' reasons for opposing stricter gun laws may be that they do not believe stricter gun laws will reduce gun violence; or that stricter gun laws impair the capacity of citizens to defend themselves against tyrannical government; or that opposing stricter gun laws is part and parcel of the Republicans fighting the culture war.

I think Alabama sheriff's offices and police departments should not be cowed by politics and they should point fingers publicly at the Republicans in Montgomery who are opposed to stricter gun laws for reducing gun violence in Alabama. This will be supportive of Alabamians rising up against the Alabama Republicans in Motgomery who are harming the health and welfare of Alabamians.
